- A web communication technique in which a client requests information from a server. If the server does not have the requested data available, it holds the connection open until the data becomes available or a timeout occurs, at which point it sends the response. This contrasts with traditional polling, where the client repeatedly sends requests at fixed intervals, often resulting in unnecessary network traffic and server load.
